Download everything from the Canon USA support hub (link above) for the host OS. Canon lists driver support spanning Windows (through Windows 11) and macOS; confirm current compatibility on the support page before installing, since older bundled software may not run on the newest OS releases.
Key software components:
- Printer driver (GARO-based) — required for printing.
- imagePROGRAF Printer Driver Extra Kit / Layout Tool — includes the Gallery Wrap feature for canvas.
- Print Plug-ins — Adobe Photoshop, Canon Digital Photo Professional, and Microsoft Office.
- Media Configuration Tool — register and tune Canon and third-party media profiles.
- Color Calibration Management — create/share calibration targets (uses optional spectrophotometer).
- Status Monitor / Accounting Manager / Device Management Console — monitor printer(s) over the network.
- Leave the printer powered on (or in its low-power state) rather than fully unplugging it between jobs. The printer performs automatic maintenance cycles (nozzle checks, light cleaning) that keep the print head healthy. Fully cutting power for long periods is a leading cause of clogged heads.
- If the printer must sit unused, run a nozzle check and light cleaning when returning it to service.
- Register the media type before printing — either select the matching Canon profile or create one with the Media Configuration Tool. Wrong media settings cause poor color, head strikes, and feed errors.
- Load roll media squarely to avoid skew errors. Let new media acclimate to room conditions before loading.
- Keep the cutter clean and replace it when cuts become ragged (see Parts).
- Use genuine Canon PFI-306 / PFI-706 inks for predictable color and to preserve warranty coverage. Third-party inks can void the print-head warranty.
- Don't let ink tanks run fully empty mid-job; keep spares of high-use colors (commonly Matte Black, Black, and the photo inks).
- Perform color calibration after major media changes, after a print-head replacement, and periodically per Canon's guidance. A full calibration takes ~15 minutes.
¶ Routine maintenance schedule (suggested baseline — adjust to usage)
| Interval |
Task |
| Each use |
Visual nozzle check on first print of the day; check ink/maintenance-cartridge levels |
| Weekly (low use) |
Run a nozzle-check pattern; light head cleaning only if needed |
| Monthly |
Inspect/clean the cutter and platen; check for media dust buildup |
| As prompted |
Replace ink tanks, maintenance cartridge (MC-08), and print head when the panel indicates |
| Periodic |
Color calibration; firmware review |
Log every maintenance action in the Maintenance Log at the bottom of this page so we can track part lifespans.
Start with the printer's control-panel message and cross-reference the full error/status list in the User Manual. Below are the most common categories.
- Banding, missing colors, or faint output → Run a nozzle check. If nozzles are missing, run head cleaning (start with normal, escalate to deep only if needed). Persistent gaps after several cleanings point to a print head nearing end of life.
- Color looks wrong / inconsistent → Confirm the correct media type is selected, then run color calibration. Verify you're using the intended color profile.
- Smearing or head strikes → Wrong media thickness setting or curled media. Re-check media settings and flatness.
- Common panel messages include: paper loaded askew, cannot feed paper, cannot cut paper, roll is empty, end of paper feed, "release lever is in wrong position," and rewinding error. Most resolve by reloading media squarely, checking the release lever position, and confirming roll vs. sheet mode matches what's loaded.
- Borderless printing not possible / paper position not suitable → The loaded width isn't a supported borderless size, or the media is misaligned. Use a supported borderless width and realign.
- "Ink insufficient / no ink left / ink tank is empty" → Replace the indicated tank.
- "Remaining level cannot be correctly detected" or "ink tank cannot be recognized" → Reseat the tank; if it persists, the tank or its contacts may be faulty (more common with refilled/third-party tanks).
- Maintenance-cartridge-full prompts → Replace the MC-08 (user-replaceable, no service call needed).
- "Cannot calibrate — excessive temperature or humidity" → Bring the room into the printer's supported environmental range and retry.
- "Please execute common calibration" → Run the common calibration using a supported paper as prompted.
- Job won't print or stalls → Confirm the correct driver and that the printer is online on the network/USB; check the Status Monitor for held jobs. Restart the spooler/driver, then the printer if needed.
Escalate to a Canon-authorized service provider when: the print head fails repeatedly after replacement, hardware errors reference internal mechanisms (carriage, feed motor), or any error code isn't resolved by the manual's recommended steps. Note: Improper repairs or non-Canon parts can void print-head warranty coverage.
