- Closed-toe shoes at all times in the studio
- Safety glasses required when mixing or handling raw glazes
- No clay, slip, or glaze waste down any drain. Use the designated clay trap and reclaim systems.
- All glaze mixing must be done with appropriate PPE and in designated areas.

All firings are recorded in the Kiln Firing Log which is kept in the ceramics studio.
Kiln Firing Log
All members are required to fully clean their work area before leaving each session. The ceramics studio requires wet cleanup methods at all times — dry sweeping or blowing is prohibited due to silica dust hazard.
- Sponge down all surfaces — wedging table, shelves, and your wheel. Remove all clay scraps and slip.
- Wipe wheels thoroughly — clean the wheel head, splash pan, bat pins, and surrounding surfaces with a damp sponge.
- Rinse sponges and tools into the designated clay trap sink only, never a standard drain.
- Return all tools to their proper storage location, cleaned and dry.
- All clay scraps and trimmings go into the reclaim bin.
- Never put clay, slip, or glaze-contaminated water down a regular drain. Use only the clay trap sink.
- Empty and rinse reclaim buckets if full — do not leave an overflowing reclaim bucket.
- Wipe up any glaze drips immediately from shelves, tables, and floors.
- Rinse glaze containers and brushes in the clay trap sink. Wipe containers dry before returning them to the glaze shelf.
- Do not pour excess liquid glaze down the drain — return it to the bucket or consult staff for disposal.
- Wet mop the floor in your work area using the designated ceramics mop and bucket.
- Empty and rinse the mop bucket into the clay trap sink after use.
- Do not dry sweep — always use wet methods to avoid raising silica dust.
- Confirm shelves are tidy and your work is labeled and on the correct shelf.
- Ensure all water sources are off.
- Return any shared equipment (bats, ribs, tools) to storage.
- If you used the kiln or loaded a firing, complete the Kiln Firing Log entry before leaving.
